Am I being set up for an FBI raid?

Today I purchased a used 3TB HD via Craigslist. Unlike some clueless individual that for months has been trying to sell a 500GB drive for $50, this guy sold me this drive for just $25. He did warn me that there isn’t a whole lot of free space on the drive as it’s almost full of movies. Crap - the temptation to see what’s on there is almost too great. It almost feels like a trap. At the very least I know I should do a full and complete virus scan as I’m sure that the sources for these movies could be considered highly questionable. I didn’t buy it under the expectation that there would be movies and such on it as this was only discussed as I picked up the drive.

So, should I peek or just do a multi-pass wipe and reformat?

As long as you don’t download a car you should be fine.

The solution about getting viruses is to use a library computer.

I assume if there was anything...gross/illegal on it, he would have just thrown it away instead of selling it for $25. I’d probably still just wipe it though.

They’re movies all right - home movies. Of him. And various other people, who may or may not have consented...

Wipe it.

Well, with 3D printing improving as quickly as it is, this might soon be a viable thing...

I would think that if you are selling a hard drive you would wipe it yourself first.....

Two words: Plausible deniability.

Zero it out and reformat.

Raid is such a strong word, served a search warrant would be more likely.

That commercial pisses me off almost as much as the Truth one attacking tobacco companies for giving free cigarettes to mental hospitals. We were trying to be nice, goddammit, you could have said no if you didn’t want them.

Here’s what I’d do. Get a shitty old offline laptop that can connect to the HD, use it to wipe the HD. Now use the program (I’m not sure which one) that properly scrambles the remaining data on the drive. Then repartition it and you’ve got a shiny new drive that won’t get you in trouble.

Plus, by wiping it with a machine that won’t compromise your usual computers when you connect that HD, you’re protecting yourself. ALWAYS consider network connectivity when dealing with unknown devices.
